continued again… On my 4th year of lessons I learned the Pentatonic and G Major scales. So I could start playing guitar solos. I don’t have a great memory… There are a lot of scales… I only memorized the two. And then I use my EAR from there. My ADVICE… Spend 25 to 50% or more of your time creating ORIGINAL music (Songs, song ideas, or instrumentals). Listen to my GUITARS 2006 through 2011 music. All originals. Start by trying to write music like that. Happy guitar playing :-)

Learn to rock with the best

continued… Years 2 3 4 I was on my own learning all I could by ear from Van Halen tape cassettes. Tryng to play every song as close as I could. Years later I learned I wasn’t playing them correct and that Eddie Van Halen plays with a lot of detail. Eddie Van Halen was very mature as a guitar player for being so young and playing so well. His fast messy notes weren’t messy at all… I just couldn’t hear the detail. My 4th year I took one more year lessons at Schmitt Music Center…

I started on drums in 3rd grade (8 years old) and then guitar in 5th grade (10 years old). I learned how to tune a guitar my first week. Learned a few chords a week (D, A, G, E, Am, D7, Dm, F, C, A7, E7, Em)… all the open chords. Then learned bar chords (Major, major 7, Minor, minor 7). Then some simple picking on those open chords a couple weeks. Then learned 3 picking songs (Dust In The Wind, Alices Restaurant, Black Bird). Then bought an electric guitar at the end of year 1.

The guitar I am playing in this video is a Steinberger model GL7TA. The bridge is an original Steinberger bridge with the TRANS-TREM feature. The pickups are EMG89 pickups which work in both single and dual coil modes. Regarding the Panama solo… I’m not sure what the pre-solo is you are talking about. Exactly what time does the video say when that pre-solo section starts?

Sorry… I’ll change the song title in the description. I don’t know the names to some of this Van Halen music I’m playing… so I didn’t mention the song titles in the description. If you know the name to this Van Halen music I’m playing and I did not put that name in the description… Please post it here and I will. Thanks, Jim.

Yes. It’s a STEINBERGER model GL7TA guitar. GL = the style guitar, 7 = the pickup configuration (2 EMG89 pickups), T = Trans-Trem feature included (allowing a person to raise/lower the whammy bar locking it into 5 different locations… ALL strings bend in-tune with each other), A = Active EQ (requires a 9 volt battery, treble and bass knobs both in the same location).

Yeah, Don’t worry about how good you or I am. There’s always someone better you’ll learn. It’s about having fun. Even if you aren’t the best guitar player… Doesn’t mean you can’t write the best song or guitar instrumental someday. It’s not always about how fast you can play. Sometimes a slow melody WINS.

    rock guitar lessons

Thanks. Feel free to video tape yourself and we can all post video responses here of us jamming on our guitars, drums, keyboards, bass, whatever. Figured I’d video tape myself just doing a normal daily jam… yet throw in some guitar solo ideas for people if they want.

Well… Most days I’ll just jam on my own… I thought maybe someone could get ‘something’ out of what I’m doing if I recorded myself when I am just jamming. I tried giving some guitar solo ideas for people too… playing some ideas really slow so people could learn them if they want. Try to show people what’s going on in my head to play how I play.
